The trail that leads from Trecchina to the Madonna del Soccorso is among the most important and panoramic of the Lagonegro area, in fact from the top of Serra Pollino, at 1,099 meters above sea level, the view can span a large part of the Lucano-Calabro Apennines and the Policastro Gulf.
The Sanctuary, built in 1926 on an ancient chapel, preserves a 16th century bas-relief depicting the Madonna del Soccorso.
From Piazza del Popolo we continue through characteristic and narrow alleys towards the “Castello“, the old village that still preserves the signs of ancient fortifications and the baronial palace. When you reach the “Castello“, continue for a few hundred meters along the asphalt road until you reach the path.
From here you climb without great effort up to the Sanctuary, following the ancient path that every year on the second Sunday of May is walked in procession by many believers to accompany the Madonna to the mountain. The summit is reached after about 4 kilometers across beautiful woods.
After stopping at the Sanctuary, you reach the nearby summit, and here the view of the Gulf of Policastro opens up to the hikers. You go back to Trecchina via the Forraina, a beautiful tree-lined avenue, where the chapel of the Madonna del Soccorso is located.
It is here that on the way back from the mountain the statue of the Madonna is hosted for one night in September.
Points of interest along the route:
- Church of San Michele Arcangelo (in the piano part)
- Church of the Forraina
- Sanctuary of the Madonna del Soccorso
Length / Time: 7.5 km / 5 hours
How to travel: on foot, by bike, on horseback
The pilgrimage for the solemn celebrations is held every year on September 7th and 8th.
